![]() ![]() There are many scenario opportunities for this route and I believe would make a great edition to Train Simulator no matter what era it's set in. The New River Train still operates yearly but is now operated under diesel power as CSX issued a system-wide steam ban in the mid 1990s. These trains were so popular that the trains grew up to 30+ passenger cars in length. ![]() The New River Trains were held every fall through the New River Gorge between Huntington and Hinton West Virginia and were pulled by steam locomotives like Milwaukee Road #261, and NKP 765. But its most famous claim to fame was the New River Trains. C&O 614 even pulled several coal drags through the gorge in the mid 1980s while testing for the ACE 3000 project which eventually fell through. Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s the New River Gorge hosted several famous steam excursions, such as the Chessie Steam Special, pulled by Reading T1 #2101, the Chessie Safety Express pulled by C&O #614, as well has hosting the 1991 NRHS convention with Nickel Plate Road #765 and Pere Marquette #1225 with a series of double headed excursions, and double tracked rub-by's. Eventually it was taken over by CSX in the mid 1980s and continues to operate through the New River Gorge today along with Amtrak. ![]() As the 1940s and 50s rolled around, the New River Gorge became stomping grounds for their famous 2-8-4 Kanahwas and 4-8-4 Greenbriers as they hauled long ore drags along the New River. During this time, it was home to many mining operations with the C&O carrying the newly mined minerals to nearby towns. This scenic stretch of track began as part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in the late 1800s. ![]()
